ICCH 2019 Scholarship Opportunities

The Academy of Communication in Healthcare (ACH) is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships to support attendance at the 2019 ICCH October 27-30, 2019 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina.

Two categories of scholarships are available, please see below for more details.
Only one scholarship may be awarded per individual.

Application Deadline: 
Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 5:00pm EST 

Applicants Will Be Notified Around Mid-August.

Health Equity Scholarships

ACH envisions a health care system where all patients, healthcare professionals, trainees and researchers feel valued, are treated equitably with respect, compassion, understanding, and are actively engaged in healthcare processes and decisions. These scholarships are motivated by the organization’s commitment to training under-represented healthcare professionals and to reducing healthcare disparities.

Scholarship Award:
ACH will award ten (10) $1,000 USD scholarships.  The scholarship winners will be instructed to register for the conference, and upon submission of applicable receipts will then be reimbursed up to $1,000 USD.

Scholarship Application Eligibility:

  • Any current ACH member or non-member** interested in attending the 2019 ICCH course who identify themselves as being from under-represented racial/ethnic groups. These may include, but are not limited to: Hispanic/Latinx, Black/African-American, Asian-American, Native American / Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian / Pacific Islander, and people from outside the U.S.

  • All professional and patient perspectives are welcome.

**If not a member of ACH, scholarship winner is required to purchase the ACH member bundle with the ICCH registration to receive ACH membership and reduced ICCH registration fee.

Scholarship Winner Requirements:

  • At the conference, Equity Scholars agree to attend 75% of the conference sessions
  • One week after the conference, Scholars must submit
    • Three goals related to new research and/or teaching methods they learned at the conference and
    • A summary of their ICCH experience and how it will affect their work.

Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarships

ACH endeavors to increase diversity in perspective, expertise, and insights in health communication and relationship-based healthcare at the upcoming 2019 ICCH. This funding is intended to support scholars in the humanities and social sciences who have not previously attended the ACH ICCH and may otherwise be unable to attend. Eligible scholars include faculty, graduate students, or post-doctoral students in humanities or social sciences departments or fields whose work focuses on patient-clinician communication and relationships.     

Scholarship Award:
ACH will award ten (10) $1,000 USD scholarships.  The scholarship winners will be instructed to register for the conference, and upon submission of applicable receipts will then be reimbursed up to $1,000 USD**.

**If not a member of ACH, scholarship winner is required to purchase the ACH member bundle with the ICCH registration to receive ACH membership and reduced ICCH registration fee.

Priority will be given to those applicants who: 

  • are a 1st time ICCH attendee;
  • submitted an abstract for consideration; and
  • are a scholar in the Humanities and Social Sciences
    • From areas of health communication, communication studies, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, rhetoric, or health information technology (HIT)  
    • Whose work focuses on communication and relationship-centered care in health contexts
